As I continue to forge blades I am always feels as though I am constantly chasing a fine line between performance, balance, tradition, class and style vs. naivety, texture, heritage and the punk rock post industrial waste land that I grew up in across the south before these places became hip, that inspires my work....I feel that every piece I make is getting closer to expressing how this is my art.....the space between raw and refined...i love the action of converting antique and forgotten materials into tools to inspire and share, that will out last us all...
You gotta keep ur babies safe. I think this ol gal is ready to go to its new home....if you haven’t been following along check my past posts to see how this piece was made!...this project has been both very challenging and rewarding in so many ways and it’s a great feeling to know my work will live on far beyond me! Thanks for all the kind things everyone has had to say! I’m incredibly grateful for the support 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Behold the Hawg-Splitter! I’m beyond thrilled with how this bad mama came out! Weighing in at 4lbs 11oz and 32” with absolutely perfect balance...This project challenged so many of my skills in the best ways....but @aswersky and @herdprovisionschs are going to be putting it to the true test! Starting from a 14” long piece of rusty steel from an antique bean cultivator, this was completely forged to finished dimensions and handled with the finest piece of antique cocobolo I could get my hands on....also nice to work in some accents with the use multiple brass pins 👌🏿....maybe I’ll get some test vids up later if y’all wanna see what it’ll do 😈?
Starting the week off strong 💪🏿! Very excited to finally put some new materials and processes to work...first if all, of you’re not familiar with my work, this knife is made from 99.9% recycled content ♻️(the glue is the only thing I haven’t figured out, yet)...The 8” blade was meticulously forged super thin from 100+ year old steel and it’s an absolute laser...but what I’m most excited about is the handle...I used the live edge of a cherry burl for the handle and the bolster is a new material I have been developing made from @lckingmfg white oak cone denim...Do you dig it?
How bout this lil guy? Hand forged 1095 sawmill blade with walnut and custom pins @chefkevinkorman
Visiting with old friends and saying hi to all you new ones.... this piece, made for @nativemaps was just in for a spa visit...i love seeing how my work progresses, changes and ages with time and use, marking where I was (metaphorically) as an artist 👩‍🎨 and the life of the object beyond me.....I’ve been overwhelmed by the responses I’ve gotten over the past week from everyone who has found me through gracious chef @hseanbrock ...all that said, if you’ve reached out, I’m working through my emails and messages, but don’t worry, I see you all and I’m very grateful for you all who make it possible for me to pursue my passions 🙏🏾
Little bush knife headed for the mountains of Alaska! Hand forged from a 100 year old sawmill blade with some stabilized maple burl my hometown man @valhalla_designs hooked me up with a few months back
Thanks to @storefrontstudios for grabbing a great shot of this blade @porterflea for me....this piece gave me its own challenges but I was super stoked about the way it came out...and I feel great knowing it’s gone to a good home @hseanbrock
Lil chef blade forged from an antique Nicholson file with cherry 🍒 burl handle this will be available @porterflea next week...see you there nashville!
Freshly restored 1950’s-60’s Forgecraft hi-carbon scimitar butcher knife...super cool blade, rehandled with dyed and stabilized (in house) walnut burl , reground and blackened.... you can come pick this up in nashville @porterflea last weekend of June
Shoooo! Haven’t finished up on any blades in a while, but I’m fresh back from @blade_show and all pumped up to finish this pile I’ve got on my bench...this blade is hand forged from antique sawmill blade steel and handled with very rare and sought after vintage Westinghouse canvas micarta (pins too) ....the past few months have been occupied by other commissions, gardening and all the other wonders of spring, but now I’m putting my head down and working hard to prepare for @porterflea in nashville at the end of the month!
“That’s not a spoon....this is a spoon” -Crocodile Dundee This puppy weighs in at about 5lbs and about 18” long ....hopefully destined to be a door pull
A few months back I sent my pal Aron @facturegoods a couple small blades to play with...Aron is one of the kindest and prolific crafts people I know, so I just knew he’d do something awesome....since it’s about Morrell season he sculpted these rad handles....these would look amazing on any charcuterie board...would y’all want to see more stuff like this?! #morchella #morrell #foraging #knife #charcuterie #ceramics #mushrooms #knifemaking #knifemaker #facturegoods #jpfreshlyforged #handmade
This one needed a saya....👌🏾....hand forged from 150 layers of antique sawmill blade and bandsaw steel...I love the dense patterns created at the heel of the blade where I really had to pull the metal down in forging.... #handforged #chefsknife #chefknife #damascus #damascussteel #knifemaking #knifemaker #bladesmith #saya #customknives #chef #chefstalk #sharp #jpfreshlyforged #themakercity
I love making these big ol pizza rockers 🍕....20” of cutting edge makes these handy for all sorts of tasks around the kitchen, not just cutting pizzas...for instance, makes quick work of large bundles of basil for pesto or other big jobs...I really wish I had thought of this back when I was cooking for 100’s of people doing catering, oh well....I make these for special orders, hit me up if you want one for you or someone special #chef #pizza #catering #pesto #neopolitanpizza #chefsknife #knifemaking #knifemaker #handmade #handforged #jpfreshlyforged #foodstyling #foodstyle #flatbread #pizzacutter #pizzarocker #chefknife #carbonsteel
Finally getting close to finishing this piece....in case you thought I wasn’t making knives anymore, the honest truth is that I’ve just been sucking at it a lot lately, and haven’t really felt like sharing my “failure porn”...I’ve pushing my abilities, techniques and theories and to be honest...I’ve had to trash more knives in the past couple months than I’ve finished.....one part of me feels like I’ve learned a good bit from my mistakes, the other part of me feels like I completely suck and should just quit...but I know that in the end, it’s all part of the game and that’s just the SAD 😔 talkin ...in the end every piece I build from here out will be better for it 💪🏿.....this one is a 9” euro chef ($old) made from completely recycled materials ♻️ hand forged to shape from antique sawmill blade and bandsaw blade, folded to about 150 layers with stabilized cherry burl handle....the daffodils are starting to bloom and grass is starting to turn green, so I guess that means spring time almost here, I’m hoping that I too, will soon begin to come out of the winter funk and back in bloom, bigger and brighter
I’ve been holding on to these little antique brass clay stamps from India for some time, finally put one to use and it made a perfect counter weight.... this blade style is called a nakiri, they vary in size but this one is 6.5” blade with 12”oal, a pretty good size, its primary use is chopping vegetables, which makes having a perfect balance pretty crucial to its performance....the handle is some maple burl that I stabilized along with a paper stone bolester @wearepaperstone ....these blades aren’t particularly hard to forge, so I used my tiniest ball pein for a little extra challenge on the 1095 high carbon sawmill blade steel ....love to hear whatcha think! (Sorry, it’s sold, but I’d be happy to make you a similar if you’re interested)........ #nakiri #customknife #customchefknife #knifemaking #knifemaker #jpfreshlyforged #themakercity #chef #foodstylist #kitchentool
